Focus on Kindness

Focus on Kindness: Dealing with the aftermath of the election

Focus on Kindness: Dealing with the aftermath of the Presidential election

The 2016 Presidential election is over, along with the negative campaigning, name-calling, relentless ads, and uncomfortable debates. We are left, however, with the aftermath of this hate-filled campaign season: a country divided with citizens threatening one another, protests in the streets, and children who fear their families will be ripped apart. Our reality is starting to look more like Panem than America.

In Mockingjay, Katniss learned to deal with her nightmares by focusing on the acts of kindness she witnessed each day:

Mockingjay Acts of Goodness
"I'll tell them that on bad mornings, it feels impossible to take pleasure in anything because I'm afraid it could be taken away. That's when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I've seen someone do. It's like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years.
But there are worse games to play." (From p. 390 of Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.)

Recalling these "acts of goodness" is a cathartic activity for Katniss. It reminds her that there is, indeed, kindness and good left in the world.

You don't have to be a survivor of the Hunger Games or suffered under President Snow's tyranny to use this technique to cope with your anger, fears, or uneasiness that you might be feeling right now. It's a great activity to remind us all that kindness is still alive.

You can download this free activity from my TpT store. It includes directions and a handout for students with an optional writing component. While implementing the activity, you may use these tips:
acts of goodness
• Remind your students to focus on the positive things they see each day.

• Have students share their findings with the class.

• Start a kindness or "Acts of Goodness" wall in which students write their daily observations.

• Don't offer rewards for kind acts; this sends the wrong message to students. We want students to be kind for intrinsic reasons.

What I have noticed is students who are actively looking for examples of selfless acts are often inspired to be kinder themselves. And isn't that the ultimate goal?

If your students are yearning for another trilogy after reading The Hunger Games, consider teaching Divergent by Veronica Roth. The novel has started to grow on me the more times I read it...enough so that I started using it in class. Over the past year I've created several resources for teachers and recently posted them.

You can pick and choose which items you need, or buy them all in one bundle with my complete Divergent novel unit.

What you will find in my teaching unit:

Chapter questions pack (This is comparable to my Student Survival Guide for The Hunger Games): It contains an introduction activity, vocabulary exercises, chapter questions, and integrated Common Core language, reading, and writing practice.
Preview of Divergent Novel Unit from Hunger Games Lessons

Final Exam: 60 pages of Common Core assessments and answer key, plus it includes an editable Microsoft Word copy.

Movie vs. the Book Activity Pack: Includes over 20 different exercises (some don't even require viewing the movie to complete). Great for using with the upcoming March release of the movie "Divergent." (Which is produced by our friends at Lions Gate®.)

Many teachers were waiting for me to post this and I apologize that it took so long. I wanted to make sure the activities were relevant and completely aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Plus, I teach full-time, so...that tends to cut into my writing time. ;)

I hope you'll find my unit to fit perfectly into your curriculum. It is versatile for grade 7 all the way up through seniors. I cover almost all of the reading literature standards, as well as many of the language and writing standards. You don't have to worry about being "brave" going into this unit; I've got your back. Enjoy!

Need an AFFORDABLE option for classroom books? I purchased mine through Amazon, below. They are only $5.24 each and free shipping if you are a Prime member.

#BannedBooksWeek Activities & Freebies

#BannedBooksWeek Activities and Resources on Hunger Games Lessons

How are you celebrating your freedom to read this week? If you need ideas, there are several sites you can visit to incorporate Banned Books Week into your class discussions.

The official Banned Books Week website, in conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), offers resources for teachers, such as their anti-censorship website (with additional links/help), and their comprehensive list of challenged titles since 2004.

• Using the list, read the titles to your class. (Do not reveal that the books have been challenged.) While you do this, have students copy the titles of the books they have read. After you've gone through the list, reveal that all of those books have been banned or challenged in recent years. Begin a discussion about book banning and why parents (and others, though most of the challenges come from parents) object to the material.
Banned Books Week: Resources and Activities for Educators

• Have your students host a Virtual Read-Out. Record them reading a challenged/banned book and post to the site.

• Show this video of books that have been banned or challenged in the past year, then have a discussion with your students, asking them:
    - Which books surprised you the most?
    - Which books have you read?
    - Would a book banning increase your desire to read said book?
(Video courtesy of Plainfield Public Library)

• Download these FREE bookmarks and distribute to your students:
    - "I Read Banned Books" Bookmarks
    - President Snow's Panem Bookmarks
    - I Love Harry Potter Bookmarks (The Harry Potter series is on the frequently banned or challenged lists each year)

Celebrate Poetry Hunger Games Style!

I started working on a Hunger Games-themed poetry freebie and figured I would finish it over spring break. Oops... Since this is already April 12, I thought I better post some of the pages I HAVE completed so you can use them during poetry month! Of course, you can (and should) incorporate creative writing exercises any time throughout the year. It allows your students to think freely and differently than they normally do.

UPDATED: I completed the packet! You can download it here free:
The Hunger Games Creative Writing Exercises

Here's some Acrostic poetry-writing exercises you can use with your students. The first letter of each line will begin with a letter in the character's name. The content should relate to the character. Lines can be as simple as one-word, or full sentences, or a mixture of both. The "speaker" of the poem can be the character or written in third person.

Here's an example of one I wrote as if I were Katniss:
Knowing I will most
Assuredly die
Tomorrow, I toss aside the
Notion of hope I've recklessly
Instilled in my
Sister. But hope has a way of
Sneaking back.

Here's a more simple poem for Peeta with adjectives Katniss may use to describe him during the Games:
Patient
Emotional
Elusive
Traitor
Admirable

I have many more pages coming, so stay tuned for additional ones. You can download them {HERE}.
