Katniss' Coping Techniques: Remembering Acts of Goodness

In Mockingjay, Katniss makes a list of all the acts of goodness around her to cope with her depression from the horrific acts she witnessed and lived through. As we cope with the Sandy Hook tragedy, perhaps we can use Katniss' technique and focus on the good deeds and random acts of kindness that surround us each day.

I have always offered this lesson as a free download, but it seems especially appropriate now. Please feel free to share this with others, as well:

Have your students write about the goodness around them. The download was created in 2010, so please make adjustments to suit your class, if need be. The point is to create a positive environment, rather than one of fear. Celebrate the good in our world. Once students begin to notice the kindness of others, it is hard for them not to practice kindness in return.

  1. Your analysis of Katniss' coping strategies is amazing. It's remarkable how she uses her memories of the past to ground herself in the present. Her ability to remember the good things about her past is a powerful tool that helps her overcome the struggles of the present. It's a prompt that even in the dimmest times, there is still hope and light to be found. Dissertation Help Online UK
