Teaching The Hunger Games: Updated Novel Study & Student Workbook

Now more than ever is a perfect time to teach The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. When I first started teaching the novel in 2009, there was not a single unit for purchase. So I created my own. But as we near the 20-year anniversary of its publication, I realized my unit needed an update.
The biggest makeover so far is my popular student survival guide (workbook). It combines all the things you would want in a novel study: deep critical literary analysis, vocabulary building, figurative language analysis, creative activities, puzzles, and so much more.

 

It follows the novel chapter-by-chapter and keeps students interested with a wide variety of engaging activities. If you are short on time and want to skip an activity, no problem. You can pick and choose which activities you want your students to complete.

Some of the additional updates I have completed include:

The Hunger Games Figurative Language Activities: This resource got a huge facelift and loads of additional activities, spanning the entire novel.

The Hunger Games Vocabulary: This update includes more standards-based activities and additional puzzles for a nice mix of challenge and fun.

The Hunger Games Mazes and Puzzles: This pack not only got a facelift, but I added even more puzzles and mazes. These are so perfect for early finishers and when you have a few extra minutes in your class period. They are also great for challenges! Make it a competition in your classroom who can finish first!

The Hunger Games Discussion Questions: These questions are deeper and really get your students to think critically about the text and apply it to their world. Some questions are open-ended but my detailed answer key always gives sample responses and additional things to think about.

The Hunger Games Chapter Check Questions/Quizzes: This pack of comprehension check questions is perfect to check whether your students read the chapters and whether they are following the plot. These do not contain deep-thinking questions. I liked to give them as check quizzes either at the start or end of class. I also point out in the answer key whether a question is novel-specific (I try to include as many as possible), so your students cannot rely on watching the movie to answer the questions.

The Hunger Games Introduction: I added two nonfiction bios on Suzanne Collins (two different reading levels, so you choose one) in addition to the videos students can watch. This way if technology fails, you always have a back-up plan!

The Hunger Games Character Playlist: This fun activity includes the original handouts as well as the new ones and a paperless option in Google Slides, as well. Students absolutely love this activity and it can be used at any point in the novel.

I am still working on updating my tests and a few other activities, but I'm hoping to complete those soon to include additional, more challenging assessments.
